SaferVPN Speed and perfomances
We tested a large number of servers spread around the world (see how we conduct our tests).
As with all VPNs, we checked the performance with 3 different sites Fast.com, Open Speed Test and Ookla.
The connection to SaferVPN’s server is quite fast and the performance we found was generally in line with what you would expect from a good VPN.
The European servers performed well, but not as well as the market leaders in terms of speed (ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Cyberghost or Surfshark).
The connections on the American servers were fast and reliable, and the differences in performance between the East and West coasts were small.
We had to travel long distances to encounter some problems. For example, New Zealand barely reached 10 Mbps and South Africa did not exceed 2-3 Mbps.
We checked the geolocation of the servers and found no errors; the displayed location of the servers corresponded to the real location.
Finally, we finished our tests with a DNS leakage check which proved to be conclusive.
SaferVPN unblocking Netflix and other streaming platforms
The safervpn app recommends the “US Streaming” and “UK Streaming” locations to access Netflix (US or UK) as well as BBC Iplayer. We connected to the UK server and this immediately provided access to the BBC broadcast.
Netflix has one of the best VPN blocking systems on the market, but SaferVPN wasn’t caught out, and its special US streaming servers once again gave us instant access to US Netflix.
Apart from the “US Streaming” servers we had a lot of problems connecting to Netflix. We therefore advise you to use them as a priority.
As usual, the geographical unblocking of French channels (mycanal, rmcpost, beinsport or the channels of the tnt etc.) did not pose any problem.
The performance in HD quality streaming was good. We were very satisfied, despite some slight buffering on mycanal. But given the speeds we tested at the time, this was probably due to Canal+ and not SaferVPN.
SaferVPN with torrent
While SaferVPN allows anonymous torrent downloads, only the Dutch servers allow p2p, which increases the number of users connected to the same server and has the effect of severely limiting speeds.
Torrent lovers should rather go for ExpressVPN or NordVPN, which are much more efficient.
The main features of SaferVPN
If you enable Kill Switch, it will constantly monitor your connection for any changes in status or IP address.
If it sees a change (e.g. your VPN connection fails or disconnects), it will instantly shut down your device or prevent specified apps from connecting to the Internet (e.g. torrent client) until the VPN connection is restored or you have closed the VPN app.
This feature automatically connects your device to a secure, encrypted VPN server whenever you connect to an unsecured WiFi connection.
SaferVPN's Privacy Policy
SaferVPN says it does not record :
– Your IP address
– Your DNS requests
– The IP of the server you are connecting to
– Your personal data
– Your browsing history
– Your metadata
Nevertheless, SaferVPN records some information for statistical purposes every time a user activates and uses their vpn:
– Date and time the session started
– Date and time of the end of the session
– The amount of data transmitted during each session
– Which location you chose (not the server ip address, only the country/city)
– From which country you were connected (not your IP address).
The information we store poses little or no risk to your privacy.
However, we remain suspicious of safervpn’s actual data retention policy given Israel’s close cooperation with the NSA in its mass surveillance operations.
This inexorably lowers the ‘security and privacy’ rating we gave it.
Ease of use
SaferVPN is relatively easy to use. Its application has a basic and very intuitive interface.
You can choose to connect to the nearest server with a single click or choose your preferred location from a list.
The information provided remains basic. It is a pity that several elements that help to choose a good server such as the display of the server load or its ping are missing.
Another concern is that the application settings do not select desktop notifications by default to alert you when you are connected or when the VPN connection is interrupted. This can be a problem, as if the connection fails you may not realise it unless you check the interface. But fortunately you can enable notifications from the settings area, which we strongly recommend.
There are also many other options, including the ability to change protocols (OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP, PPTP) but you can’t choose between OpenVPN UDP or TCP connection types.
You can also choose to automatically connect with the kill switch function when accessing unsecured or untrusted networks to block access to the Internet in case the VPN fails.
Not much to say about the mobile applications which are very similar to the traditional applications (windows, mac).

Our final verdict on Safervpn
SaferVPN is a mid-range VPN that has qualities such as decent performance and an application suitable for beginners, but also suffers from significant weaknesses.
First of all, its localization is not the most secure we’ve seen in terms of data confidentiality.
We should also mention the extremely limited number of servers available for torrent uploads.
Finally, its quality/price ratio is rather mediocre. How can it offer prices close to the best VPNs on the market (ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Cyberghost or Surfshark) without offering the same performance, the same features or the same assurance in terms of privacy?
SaferVPN is not a bad vpn, but there is much better for the same price.
